I Wayan Mahesa

I Wayan Mahesa is a Bali-based strategist and creative director whose work sits at the intersection of culture, community, and brand. He has spent much of his career in spaces where these three either hold together or fall apart, including at Potato Head, across F&B and creative projects such as Project: Black, Kura Kura Beer, and Santai Seltzer, and now through Galang Bulan Studio, which he founded to work on his own terms. His practice begins with context, not trends or briefs, but context. What is this place, who are these people, and what do they already know about themselves that the brand has yet to express. He works carefully in spaces where culture can be flattened quickly, so ethics are not an afterthought, with reciprocity, fair consent, credit, and compensation built into his approach, guided by the principle “Nothing about us without us.”

I Wayan Mahesa adalah strategist dan creative director berbasis di Bali yang bekerja di bidang budaya, komunitas, dan brand. Sepanjang kariernya, ia banyak terlibat dalam berbagai proyek yang menghubungkan ketiganya, termasuk saat bekerja di Potato Head, serta dalam proyek F&B dan kreatif seperti Project: Black, Kura Kura Beer, dan Santai Seltzer. Kini, ia menjalankan Galang Bulan Studio yang ia dirikan untuk bekerja dengan pendekatan yang lebih mandiri. Pendekatannya selalu dimulai dari konteks, bukan sekadar tren atau brief. Ia melihat lebih dulu tempatnya, siapa orang-orangnya, dan apa yang sebenarnya sudah mereka miliki, tetapi belum terwakili dalam sebuah brand. Ia juga bekerja dengan hati-hati agar budaya tidak disederhanakan begitu saja. Karena itu, aspek etika menjadi bagian penting dalam prosesnya, mulai dari timbal balik, persetujuan yang jelas, hingga pengakuan dan kompensasi yang adil. Prinsip yang ia pegang adalah, “Tidak ada tentang kami tanpa melibatkan kami.”
