Pre-Event: BASE GENEP – Visual Art Showcase at Kulidan Kitchen & Space

Kulidan Kitchen & Space proudly invites you to explore an art exhibition themed Base Genep, a Balinese culinary term meaning “complete seasoning.” This theme was chosen for its relevance to issues of food sovereignty, cultural heritage, local ingredients, taste, and identity. The exhibition explores traditional knowledge found in palm-leaf manuscripts such as Purincining Ebatan and Usabe, as well as the role of Base Genep in daily life, ceremonial rituals, and the tourism industry. Four artists have been invited to elaborate on this theme: photographers Vifick Bolang and Wayan Naya, along with painters I Nyoman Wijaya and I Wayan Wirawan.

Wayan Naya documents rare chili pastes and spice plants found on the slopes of Mount Batukaru, linking culinary practices with conservation and mythology. I Nyoman Wijaya presents botanical illustrations of Base Genep plants and hand gestures involved in food preparation. Vifick Bolang highlights the use of spices in personal, communal, and religious contexts. Meanwhile, I Wayan Wirawan translates the content of Purincining Ebatan into visual artworks through explorations of form, color, and taste sensations.

The exhibition is curated by I Komang Adiartha and Ni Nyoman Ayu Suciartini, and will open on Friday, May 23, 2025, at Kulidan Kitchen & Space. Visitors are also invited to enjoy snacks and beverages crafted with Base Genep spices.

Kulidan Kitchen & Space mempersembahkan pameran seni rupa bertema Base Genep, istilah dalam bumbu masakan Bali yang berarti “bumbu lengkap.” Tema ini dipilih karena berkaitan dengan isu kedaulatan pangan, warisan budaya, pangan lokal, selera, dan identitas. Pameran ini mengeksplorasi literasi tradisional seperti lontar Purincining Ebatan dan Usabe, serta peran Base Genep dalam kehidupan sehari-hari, upacara adat, dan industri pariwisata. Empat seniman dipilih untuk mengelaborasi tema ini: fotografer Vifick Bolang dan Wayan Naya, serta pelukis I Nyoman Wijaya dan I Wayan Wirawan.

Wayan Naya mendokumentasikan sambal dan tanaman bumbu langka di lereng Batukaru, mengaitkan praktik kuliner dengan konservasi dan mitologi. I Nyoman Wijaya menampilkan ilustrasi botani dari tanaman Base Genep serta gestur tangan dalam proses pengolahan makanan. Vifick Bolang menyoroti pemanfaatan rempah dalam konteks konsumsi personal, komunal, dan ritual keagamaan. Sementara itu, I Wayan Wirawan menerjemahkan isi lontar Purincining Ebatan ke dalam karya visual melalui eksplorasi bentuk, warna, dan sensasi rasa.

Pameran ini dikurasi oleh I Komang Adiartha dan Ni Nyoman Ayu Suciartini, dan akan dibuka pada Jumat, 23 Mei 2025, di Kulidan Kitchen & Space. Pengunjung juga dapat menikmati kudapan dan minuman yang diracik dari rempah-rempah Base Genep.
